Here is a quote about meetings:
"A meeting is an event where minutes are taken and hours wasted.”
James T. Kirk
Would you comment on it, please?

In my opinion the most common criticism of meetings is that they are a
ReplyDeletecomplete waste of time. For example, nobody seems to come to the meeting
properly prepared or nothing interesting is ever discussed there.
Sometimes you leave a meeting not really knowing what you're supposed to
do next, what the action plan is. It is the evidence of inefficient use
of time.
To make meetings effective you should keep them brief and stick to the
agenda so participants don't have the feeling that their time is being
wasted. Starting meetings on time shows respect for participants'
schedules and more will be accomplished if a meeting ends before
participants' eyes glaze over. Without a firm time-schedule, meetings
can last longer than anticipated.

ReplyDeleteI agree with this quotation. I think that if not thoroughly prepared, meetings can be time wasting, poorly run and unproductive torture sessions. As the practice shows, although businesses have to run meetings, very often, meetings run businesses. To my mind, having a well written agenda is crucial for any meeting. If the purpose of a meeting is not clear to the attendees; the objectives are not defined, meetings will generally be not effective. In addition, the performance of any business meetings also depends on its duration. Sometimes a meeting can be delayed but the main question may not be resolved at the end of it.
ReplyDeleteMoreover, as far as I know, a lot of the meetings are held according to the schedule of a company to have a certain number of meetings during a certain period of time. So people attend these meetings and consider them to be a complete waste of time.
As for me, I totally agree with the quotation. Meetings often become the complete waste of time, mostly when people don't stick to the agenda. The biggest part of the meeting is spent to prepare for making the main decision or just to discuss some not important things.
ReplyDeleteIt is not a secret that meetings usually have one main objective, or aim. If people were discussing only important and neccessary things during the meetings, they would not last too long! In my opinion the best way to hold a metting is to start with stating the oblectives, then to open them up for discussion and at last to state the main points made during the meeting.
If all meetings were held this way, I thik they would be more productive and less boring.
I couldn`t agree more!
ReplyDeleteNearly 90% of meetings are a complete waste of time, and the rest –
truly effective. Every participant, of course, if he is well-prepared,
has his own point of view and often defends it to the last. Another
problem is that the meeting hasn’t a clear focus: sometimes personal
purposes or abstract questions which have no relation to business are
discussed there – it is a complete waste of time! Also, the meeting
often lasts longer than necessary: the leader, instead of letting his
subordinates go, when all the questions are discussed, delays the
meeting to make it last exactly as much as it has been planned.
So, personally I think that meetings are necessary, but we have to
follow several important rules of holding and participation in meetings
not to waste our time. It is precious.
I fully agree with this quotation. Well,to be honest, everybody knows we often don't actually decide anything at meetings. Only some minutes are really productive and long hours are a complete waste of time.
